Steelers surprised the British ice hockey top flight today by bringing in forward Danny Kristo, a friend of Sheffield forward Daniel Ciampini.

The 32-year-old American joins from HK Dukla Michalovce in the Slovakian league.

The club initially suggested they would not be replacing injured Evan Mosey, who is out for more than a month.

Kristo arrived in Sheffield last night and will play this evening against Guildford Flames should the club get the paperwork completed in time.

Head coach Aaron Fox said: “With Evan on the Injury Reserve list and the injury likely keeping him out of the lineup for at least six weeks we have brought in Kristo.

“Danny is a quality offensive forward who has played very well in some of the best leagues in Europe. He has proven to excel on the Power Play and can play all three forward positions and should fit in a top six role.

“Danny should give our offensive lines another versatile forward.

“With Ostlund, Mosey and Mitchell on the IR this early in the season we wanted to make sure we have proper cover and when Danny became available earlier this week we felt he would be a good fit for what we maybe have lacked early in the year here.

“Mason Mitchell (who arrived on Sunday) is now skating in a non-contact jersey and doing his physiotherapy here in Sheffield and will potentially be available in the next couple of weeks once our medical team gives him the green light and our S&C deems he’s in proper game shape.

“I have been very happy with what Tomas Pitule has done for us as Mason's injury cover.

"He has brought outstanding energy, reliability and a high-end work rate to our group and is making a strong case to earn a longer stay. I’m a firm believer in competitive culture within our group and think with us getting Danny in and Mason potentially back soon I hope it raises our level within our group”.
