Sheffield Wednesday’s summer facelift begins as Hillsborough renovations get underway

The Owls’ Hillsborough pitch was put under serious strain over the last season after the pandemic meant that they were unable to relay the field in the break between the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns.
Wednesday’s groundsmen worked tirelessly on keeping it playable for the season just gone, but the quick turnaround of games certainly took its toll on the field of play as the months went on.

Hide AdMinutes released from a recent Supporters Engagement panel meeting confirmed the plans to sort that at the end of the campaign, saying, “DC said that normally, all the pitches are re-laid at the end of every season but the pandemic has made that plan impossible and the pitch surfaces have suffered at almost all clubs as a result…
“He said significant pitch investments have been made at the main stadium and training ground and confirmed the pitch renovation at Hillsborough and Middlewood Road would begin as soon as the season is over.”
Now The Star understands that pitch renovations at Hillsborough began this week as the groundskeepers look to get it back to its best ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, while it has already been reported that work started on Middlewood Road not long back.
The news will be welcomed by technical staff and players alike, especially given Moore’s desire to play out of the back – a style that requires a tidy playing surface.
