As long as it’s mathematically possible, Sheffield Wednesday’s players, management and many fans will keep the faith – but this weekend’s results have made the challenge even tougher.

The Owls were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Watford on Friday in what was a decent performance against one of the top sides in the Championship, but while the showing was decent, the result remained the same. A defeat.

And while Rotherham United lost to Millwall (missing a penalty, too) and failed to open up the gap between them, Birmingham City picked up a late win over Swansea City as former Sheffield United striker, Scott Hogan, scored from the spot late on.

So although Wednesday and the 22nd-placed Millers remains at three points, Birmingham’s victory saw them leapfrog Coventry City and increase the points needed for the Owls to climb out of the relegation zone.

Climbing above the Sky Blues is now the priority for Darren Moore and his side as Lee Bowyer’s side went nine points ahead of Wednesday, however it’ll take a monumental effort to make up the seven points needed to catch up.

Coventry also have a marginally better goal difference than SWFC (-19 to -20) as things stand, however the series of evens required needed for the Owls to overtake them would see that GD change drastically anyway.

Looking at the other five teams in the current bottom six, it’s worth noting that Wednesday have lost to all of them at least once, and were beaten twice by Rotherham. Those results are now coming back to bite them in a big way.

So while it’s not quite Mission Impossible yet, this weekend’s results have left Wednesday with an even bigger mountain to climb than they had before, and an upturn in fortunes for both Derby County and Nottingham Forest suggests that the final two games will now no longer be a chance to claw back ground on those two.

It’s probably a six horse race for survival now, and the Owls’ no longer have the chance to directly take points off of any of the others in the battle.
