Wilder, who spent two years at Sixfields before being appointed by Sheffield United in 2016, also won promotion from the fourth tier during his last season with The Cobblers, although they were later relegated under caretaker Dean Austin.
Wilder, who was watching on television when Town thrashed Exeter City at Wembley on Monday night, said ahead of United’s Premier League fixture with Tottenham Hotspur: “Congratulations to my old club Northampton. I was delighted for Keith and his staff. I loved my time there.

Curle, a former United player, described Wilder as an inspiration for every coach working in the lower divisions before last summer’s friendly between the two clubs. After delivering the League One title to Bramall Lane, Wilder then ended United’s 12 year absence from top-flight competition 15 months ago. They prepared for tomorrow evening’s meeting against Spurs in ninth.
“I’m not thinking about myself, I’m just thinking about getting a result,” Wilder responded, when he was reminded of Curle’s comment earlier this week. “There’s loads of talented managers right the way through the pyramid.
“Some of our toughest tactical games have been lower down. I enjoy it when players don’t fall over without being shot - the honesty in the game at that level."
