But Blades fans and, more importantly, the manager himself knows exactly why it was such a good move for all concerned when it was announced that David McGoldrick had signed a new contract at Bramall Lane.
And if anyone was in any doubt, Wilder explained exactly what it is that makes the Republic of Ireland international such a crucial member of the United team, and the importance of keeping hold of key players, off the back of fresh deals for Ollie Norwood and Billy Sharp this week.

“He's been outstanding since he walked through the door and he's enjoying his football and from our point of view it's been a great week.
“He's such an important member of the group. He gives us something a little bit different in terms of our link up play and the way we play. The obvious one and ‘Didzy’ knows and where we need to improve on as a group as well, but he's part of that and I'm really looking forward to working with him for the next couple of years.
“It's important to keep that continuity as well. We are going to be looking to strengthen at the end of the season when that new window does open, of course, and it is really important window by window, regardless from the financial aspect that group is better than it was at the start of the season and we are working really hard to make that happen.
