Worried motorists raise concerns as police ‘erect screen’ on M1 after pedestrian hit by vehicle

The southbound M1, between Junction 36 for Barnsley and 35A for Tankersley, is closed this morning following a collision reported at 5.30am.
South Yorkshire Police said the incident was reported to emergency services at 5.30am and a screen has been erected at the scene to block the view of motorists travelling in the opposite direction.

Hide AdThe southbound stretch of the M1 is expected to remain closed until around noon.
South Yorkshire Police said: “The M1 is currently closed between Junction 36 and 35A southbound following a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian which happened at 5.30am this morning.“The road is expected to remain closed for some time while our officers investigate.
“Plan your route and avoid the area if possible.”
Posting on Facebook, Duncan Nigel Murray said: “Thoughts go out to the families and emergency workers dealing with this.”
Tracy Fox said: “Hope all involved are OK.”
The collision is causing widespread congestion both on the southbound M1 and surrounding roads as motorists follow the signed diversion and try to find alternative routes.

Hide AdThere has also been a multiple vehicle collision on the A628 near to Flouch, which is adding to the chaos on the roads.
South Yorkshire Police said: “Please expect serious traffic delays through Tankersley or Hoyland and Chapletown.”
Motorist Lucy Isabel added: “Never seen traffic like it from Chapeltown and Harley to Hoyland Common. Traffic is at a standstill. Avoid at all costs.”
