Plans for new memorial in Barnsley to honour those who lost their life to coronavirus

If plans are approved, the artwork will serve as a lasting memorial to the people who have lost their lives during the pandemic and recognise the contributions of key workers and volunteers.
Members of Barnsley Council’s cabinet will discuss plans for how the borough will recognise the impact of coronavirus at their next meeting on June 10.

Hide AdProposed plans include a town centre memorial incorporating a poignant phrase by Ian McMillan, Barnsley’s Poet in Lockdown, a virtual book of condolence, and the introduction of special award medals
The council will also review the Freedom of the Borough scheme, and look to incorporate the recognition of the valuable contributions people have made to protecting and helping Barnsley’s communities.
Coun Sir Steve Houghton, council leader, said: “The coronavirus pandemic has brought many challenges across the world and we could never have imagined, or fully planned, for how the pandemic has affected our borough.
“It’s crucial we don’t forget how hard our borough is fighting against the virus and the sacrifices people are making.
