At around 8pm on Sunday, police received numerous reports of a woman sat over the railings on a bridge over the northbound carriageway, between junctions 32 for Thurcroft and 33 for Catcliffe.
A few minutes later, the 39-year-old is believed to have fallen from the bridge on to the carriageway below.
She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Hide AdSergeant Mark Bradey, of South Yorkshire Police’s serious collisions unit, said: “As part of our investigation we need to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the woman’s death.
“I am appealing to anyone who was travelling in either direction between junctions 31 and 33 of the M1 between 8pm and 8.15pm on Sunday to contact us.
"We are looking to speak to anyone who believes they saw the woman prior to her death, or who has dashcam footage of their journey along that stretch of road.
“Any information could greatly assist our enquiries."
The motorway was closed in both directions for a number of hours, causing severe tailbacks, while emergency services dealt with the incident.
