A recruitment drive has been launched for more firearms cops in South Yorkshire.

The specialist officers are wanted as part of a move to recruit 20,000 extra frontline officers nationally.

Commenting on the expansion of its armed response team, the force said: “We’re seeking already qualified armed police officers who are looking for a new challenge, policing in a diverse and ever changing part of the UK that serves a population of over one million.

“Last year, our firearms support group undertook 700 armed deployments across South Yorkshire, providing initial response and pre-planned support to incidents and investigations across the county.

“We are a specialised firearms unit and do not undertake a 'dual-role' function. Between armed deployments, our officers assist with force priorities, predominantly the targeting of armed criminality.

“We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and hard-working individuals to join our team.”
