A shocked witness has described the shocking moment a bin exploded on a Sheffield street, sending plastic ‘flying everywhere’.

Police received numerous calls from people alarmed by the blast on Barrie Road, near the junction with Galsworthy Road, in Southey.

But they said it was understood that the wheelie bin belonged to the people who caused the damage last night, Thursday, January 7, at around 9.20pm, and there were no reported offences.

A witness, who asked not to be named, said: “I was driving past as the explosion happened. If anyone had have been walking past they would have been seriously injured if not worse.

"It was a big explosion – like a small bomb. The bin was disintegrated with bits of plastic everywhere and bringing down telephone cables.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The persons responsible are believed to have been identified and spoken to by officers. It is understood that the bin damaged was their own property.”
