Man, 21, and boy, 17, arrested after police officer injured during vehicle pursuit

A 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy are in custody after their van smashed into a police car, injuring an officer, during a pursuit.

The police chase took place in Barnsley on Tuesday evening after a white Ford Transit van, which had previously been reported stolen to police, failed to stop for officers.

A pursuit followed, with a National Police Air Service helicopter also tracking the suspects’ vehicle. It is not know which one of them was driving.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said one officer suffered “minor injuries” after the van reversed into their car, which was also damaged.

They told The Star: “The pursuit is understood to have concluded in the Bradbury Balk Lane area, with the occupants of the van fleeing the scene.

“Two people, a 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, have been arrested in connection with the incident. They are currently in police custody. Enquiries are ongoing."
