Coronavirus: Sheffield death toll rises as city nears grim milestone and is marked as area of 'enhanced support'

The latest figures from NHS England shows that another patient who tested positive for the deadly bug died under the care of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust on September 30.
Nearly 300 coronavirus patients have died at hospitals in the city so far- the death toll currently stands at 299, with 295 deaths recorded at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, one at Sheffield Children's Hospital and three at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Hide AdThe latest death was announced after Sheffield was escalated on the Government watchlist as an ‘area of enhanced support’ due to its increasing Covid-19 infection rate.
The city’s latest weekly infection rate, as of September 28, was 105.3 cases per 100,000 people – considerably higher than 70.6 the previous week.
Across the country, 47 more patients who who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the number of confirmed reported hospital deaths in England to 30,096.
NHS England said patients were aged between 51 and 97 years old and all except two had known underlying health conditions.

Hide AdHowever the figures could be much higher as they do not include deaths that happened within care homes or the community.
Of 189 trusts in England, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has the 27th highest death toll.
NHS guidance states: "Confirmation of Covid-19 diagnosis, death notification and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure."
