Legendary Sheffield takeaway Chubbys shuts as ‘emotional’ customers say final farewell

Earlier this month, the legendary takeaway on Cambridge Street announced that it would be closing the store after more than 40 years in Sheffield.
At 4am on Monday, August 31, Chubbys served their final customer as it makes way for redevelopment work in the city centre.

Hide AdSheffield Council’s ‘Heart of the City II’ redevelopment scheme is aimed at breathing new life into the city centre and takes in Cambridge Street.
In a Facebook post to customers the owners of Chubbys said they hope to ‘relocate’.
They said: “After 40 years we are very sad to inform you that Chubbys will be forced to close from Monday, August 31 due to the proposed redevelopment of Cambridge Street.
“We hope to relocate as soon as possible - please keep a look out on Facebook for updates.

“We look forward to seeing you in the future.”
Mehran Behizad first came to Sheffield from Iran in 1973 and set up Chubbys seven years later after studying industrial design at the polytechnic.
He said the current managers are hoping to set up elsewhere when the current coronavirus pandemic subsides.
He said: “They say they want to open somewhere else but when we don’t know. To be honest it is not worth opening up at the moment.

Hide Ad“How long it will take for things to get back to normal we don’t know but they are young and they can do it.”
A number of customers took the opportunity to pay a final farewell to their favourite takeaway on Facebook.
One customer wrote: “My favourite and only place to eat on a night out.”
Another said: “Was in last night. Not ashamed to say I got a bit emotional.”
One wrote: “Went in last night. For my last kebab from there.”
Another said: “Could just eat chips & cheese sauce.”
