Sheffield Theatres has had to cancel or postpone all of its shows until at least the end of July, as the Government has not yet given auditoriums the green light to reopen despite easing some lockdown measures.
However, the company has outlined its ambition to stage classic works by William Shakespeare outside in the city’s green spaces once it is safe to do so.

Hide AdRobert Hastie, Sheffield Theatres’ artistic director, said: “We want to offer the city some joy and find a safe way to bring people together to experience live performance again. The last few weeks have reminded all of us here that theatre is what we do, not just the building where we usually do it.
“As long as we can make sure that everyone involved is safe, we can still be creative and make some great theatre happen for audiences around the city. If you can’t come to us, we’ll come to you.
“We’ll be making these shows with the same bold energy we always do, telling Shakespeare’s timeless stories with passion and humour, so that families, students and theatre-lovers of all ages can share in the joy of live performance.”
The drama organisation is liaising with Sheffield Council on the plan. More information is promised when the Government issues further advice.

Hide AdTicketholders are being contacted about shows that have been affected by cancellations or postponements.
“In addition, due to the length of the lead-in time for producing and touring theatre, some shows which were due to visit Sheffield in the autumn have also postponed or cancelled their tours. We continue to work with producers to arrange alternative dates for shows that are affected,” the theatres said.
“Please be assured that you can make bookings for future productions secure in the knowledge that should a show be cancelled you will be able to get a full refund on your tickets.”
Sheffield Theatres is offering creative activities and performances online too until its venues can reopen.
